Album Notes Full title: The Desert Storm Mixtape: Blok Party Vol. 1. This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Envy. Originally conceived simply as an attempt to capture the excitement and spontaneity of a slammin' party in recorded form, the hip-hop mix tape was later elevated to the level of art form, the most exciting tapes selling thousands of copies and gaining their creators worldwide acclaim. DJ Clue, an expert turntablist and talent scout who started by selling his tapes from a blanket on Jamaica Avenue in Queens, was perhaps the first true mix-tape superstar. Eventually gaining enough clout to found Desert Storm, his own Sony Music boutique label, Clue naturally chose to release an album by his Queens homie and protege DJ Envy. On THE DESERT STORM MIX TAPE: DJ ENVY BLOK PARTY VOL. 1, Envy's mix displays many of the same traits as his teacher's best efforts, including frequent shout-outs to himself (which feature the usual old-school, dub-style reverb), an aggressive, never-let-'em-catch-their-breath flow, and exclusive tracks from a variety of big names. DJ Envy also wisely follows Clue's lead by choosing excellent tracks that can speak for themselves with a minimum of interference. As for the tracks themselves, East Coast gangsta rap is obviously the style of choice, with the notable exception of a particularly randy Dirty South selection featuring Petey Pablo, Juvenile, and Coke.
