About this Book
Synopsis
Similar to the Academy Award-winning film THE QUEEN (2006), which brilliantly explored the closeted life of Queen Elizabeth II, THE COMMONER, a novel by John Burnham Schwartz, takes artistic liberty coupled with keen insight to imagine the inner life of two generations of real-life Japanese empresses. The novel first focuses on Michiko Shoda, the beautiful and educated woman who became the first commoner to marry into the Japanese royal family in 1959. The story moves then moves forward to when Michiko's son, the crown prince Naruhito, takes another beautiful commoner, Masako Owada, as his wife. At first she is joyfully accepted by the country, but when is unable to produce a male heir, she finds her natural vitality slowly crushed by the pressures of tradition, much to the sadness of her mother-in-law Michiko, who knows this tragedy all too well.
