Synopsis Colin and Mary, vacationing in a city very much like Venice, are not having a good time. Then they meet Robert, a seedy and somewhat sinister bar owner, and his wife--and find that the bizarre encounter energizes their deteriorating marriage. A twisted relationship develops among these four characters in a situation of mounting horror until the shocking dénouement--one of McEwan's characteristically macabre touches. The novel was made into a successful film in 1991 starring Christopher Walken and Helen Mirren.

Industry Reviews "...Mr. McEwen because he is one of the few English writers of fiction--English playwrights are another matter--who belong these days to a dark Europe; he is a Samuel Beckett with some genital organization....No reader will begin THE COMFORT OF STRANGERS and fail to finish it; a black magician is at work." New York Times Book Review - John Leonard (06/15/1981)
