Synopsis An account of a middle-aged academic's discovery of himself and his true capabilities. When Snyder is dismissed from his teaching post at Colgate University, he finds to his horror and dismay that the academic life he had always envisioned for himself may have vanished entirely. His job inquiries receive no reply, and Snyder finds himself reduced to increasingly desperate extremes: from stealing golf balls to plotting to sell his child into adoption. Eventually, an act of charity propels him into a new vocation and a new life.

Industry Reviews "A first-rate book. A harrowing story, but also a moral commentary on the smiling lies behind which our society conceals its not-so-noble truths." other - Lewis Lapham
"An authentic moral vision....A courageous and often painful examination of one man's struggle with the system." other - Robert Girardi
"Gripping....This honest, articulate memoir skillfully explores the psychological as well as the financial pain that comes with the loss of a statusy job and income." Robinson
