About this Book
Synopsis
German author Robert Lohr uses the true story of the Mechanical Turk, one of the world's greatest hoaxes, as the inspiration for his delightful historical novel. In 1770 Baron Wolfgang von Kempelen, in an attempt to impress the Empress of Hungary, creates a wooden automaton that could play masterly chess. The secret was that the machine holds enough room for an Italian chess-playing dwarf named Tibor Scardenelli. The Turk becomes a huge success and soon Kempelen and his reluctant accomplice are sent to the court of Louis XVI to perform before Marie Antoinette. The plot thickens when a courtier turns up murdered and her makeup is found smeared on the Turk.

Industry Reviews
"Rich in detail and psychological depth....[A] work of such marvelously creative imagination that it makes little difference what's factual and what isn't--it all rings true." (starred review)
