Synopsis A mostly unknown early novel by Balzac, THE CENTENARIAN vies with Mary Shelley's FRANKENSTEIN for the honor of being the first science-fiction novel. The novel's title character develops a method for artificially prolonging his life, but as a result his body undergoes a kind of petrifaction until he is more mineral than human. Like FRANKENSTEIN, THE CENTENARIAN is filled with gothic scenes of mist-shrouded castles and sublime mountain peaks, and should be considered significant in terms of both Balzac's oeuvre and the birth of science-fiction.
