Album Notes This collection contains 90 selections chronologically sequenced over 4 CDs. Of these, 8 are alternate versions to the released takes, and another 9 are previously unreleased takes. 4 songs were recorded by the newly reunited Byrds in August 1990 especially for this release; 2 others come from the Roy Orbison Tribute concert in February 1990. Packaged in a leather-covered 6" x 12" box set, it includes a 56-page booklet containing fully annotated track listings--including recording dates, sidemen, prior appearances--plus dozens of rare photos, an essay by David Fricke (of Rolling Stone magazine) and a piece written by Derek Taylor (the original Byrds press agent). Also included are personal notes from McGuinn, Hillman, Crosby and Tom Petty, and a Byrds family tree. The Byrds: Roger McGuinn (vocals, acoustic & electric 12-string guitars); David Crosby, Clarence White, Gram Parsons (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Gene Parsons (vocals, guitar, banjo, drums); Chris Hillman (vocals, mandolin, bass); Skip Battin (vocals, bass); Gene Clark (vocals, tambourine); Mike Clarke (drums). Additional personnel includes: John York (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow (pedal steel guitar); Kevin Kelley, Hal Blaine (drums). Compilation producers: Don DeVito, Bob Irwin. Digitally remastered by Tim Geelan & Vic Anesini (CBS Records Studios, New York). When THE BYRDS was released in 1990, it was one of the most eagerly awaited boxed sets ever. Although it was 25 years since the group's heyday, their precious brand of folk-rock enjoyed continued popularity, reinforced by devotees such as R.E.M., Yo La Tengo and Robyn Hitchcock. So, was the box worth the wait? Ask anyone who owns it. Its crystal-clear sound, informative book, and judicious track selection still make it an essential purchase for Byrds fans. Most of THE BYRDS is digitally remixed, but even those who prefer the original mixes are nonetheless compelled to buy it for its many previously unreleased tracks. While some of those tracks are alternate takes of released recordings, many of them are first-rate tunes that inexplicably never made it onto vinyl. As a bonus, most of the original Byrds reunited to record a few brand-new tracks for the set, including Roger McGuinn's gorgeous composition "A Love That Never Dies".
