Synopsis Like Kafka's hapless Gregor Samsa, Philip Roth's David Kepesh wakes up one day to find himself transformed--not into a cockroach, but into an enormous breast. Roth manages to make this farcical situation surprisingly realistic, as Kepesh endures the frustrating limitations of his new life; receives visits from his girlfriend, his father, and his shrink; compares himself with Kafka's cockroach (who is, after all, fictional, while Kepesh is "real"); and desperately hopes that the experience is actually a dream from which he will awaken.
Industry Reviews "Roth's prose is, as ever, elegant and intelligent, delicate even when at its most crude. It sent me...back to Kafka--a brave thing to do, but he stands the comparison well." Listener - Margaret Drabble
"Technically at least, THE BREAST seems to me Roth's best book so far. The humor and pathos (it has fair amounts of both) come from his solid grasp of how life is, his firm knowledge of the importance of strength of character and the will to live....THE BREAST is terrific for a thing of its kind: inventive and sane and very funny, though filthy of course....It's incredible, in fact, how smart he is for a man so hung up with his you-know-what." New York Times Book Review - John Gardner (07/17/1972)
