That Sam Phillips--the founder of Sun Studios, discoverer of Elvis, and producer of the some of the most definitive rock & roll records in history--considered Howlin' Wolf to be his greatest discovery says a lot. Anyone who has heard the Wolf's gravelly moan-and-wail (which sounds like a mixture of shattered glass and glue), the surging, angular grooves of his band, or his quintessential recordings of blues classics like "Smokestack Lightning," "Built for Comfort," and "Howlin' for My Darlin'" will know that Sam Phillips wasn't exaggerating.
THE BLUES ANTHOLOGY's Howlin' Wolf entry packs eighteen tracks of utter perfection, including the aforementioned classics, slow blues ("Little Red Rooster"), talking blues ("Going Down Slow"), and uptempo jams ("Wang Dang Doodle"), all led by the Wolf's thrilling, guttural croon. To call these important blues recordings undersells them: more powerful, visceral, and affecting than a lot of rock music, this is essential listening across all genres.
