Synopsis Father Jack Devlin's housekeeper, Maggie, is a former prostitute and drunk. Now, when the priest is accused of molesting two boys 15 years ago, she moves from a knee-jerk defense to doubt, and begins to drink again. When he is sentenced, she feels guilty. Then he's accused of the murder of another boy. Maggie's shifting loyalties, doubts, and attempts to find the truth form the basis for this novel about small-town gossip and the unique tortures of being both Irish-American and Roman Catholic.
