Synopsis
A monster who is shunned for his ugliness finds relief from loneliness when he befriends an inanimate rabbit he carved from stone., This picture book is about a monstrosity so dreadful to behold that every living creature runs for its life when it sees him. The grass turns brown, the plants wither and die, even the weather gets stormy, and "if he stepped into a pond for a swim, it would instantly dry up, with a hiss of steam." He tries sculpting animals out of rocks for some semblance of companionship, but they crack apart into rubble when he smiles at them--all but one stone rabbit, which stays mysteriously intact in the face of his horrifying ugliness. The loathsome-looking monster--determined to be happy in spite of everything--merrily dances and plays with his hare of stone as it sits serenely. When the monster finally dies of old age, the rabbit of rock remains, and is still there when the vicinity eventually blooms into a gorgeous garden, "perhaps the most beautiful place in the whole world." Author Chris Wormell's colorful illustrations accompany his text.
