The two groups performing on this disc, the Mills Brothers and the Ink Spots, were remarkably resilient and popular outfits whose hold over popular music has been long and influential. These tracks are taken primarily from later live concert performances. Certain changes in personnel and approach identify these as later performances, and yet the two vocal units each still display a highly identifiable sound that makes them distinctive in their own ways.
"Up a Lazy River," "Paper Doll," and "Tiger Rag" are Mills Brothers specialties that couldn't be mistaken for anyone else. The smooth combination of baritone, bass and tenor voices romanticize the music with a fullness and solidity that seems to float with a weightless grace. The Ink Spots revisit their favorites, like "Java Jive," "The Gypsy," and "If I Didn't Care." The gentle layering of voices, with the lead falsetto invariably cooing the lyrics, frames these classics in a familiar love-light.
