With skill and talent, she shapes an unmatched style of delivery, imbuing songs old and new with reality and life. Lee makes music with an edge. A remake of "Why Don't You Do Right?" is meticulous, much grittier than her earlier recording of the song with Benny Goodman's band. Lee pares down her vocals to the bare bones on such songs as "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'" and "I'm a Woman," sharpening her sense of rhythm and giving an acute edge to her blues. An impossibly ethereal earthiness imbues "Mamma's Gone, Goodbye." "You Don't Know" and "Hallelujah..." are personable and frank--almost confrontational.
