Long before new age and instrumental ambient music became their own genres and million-dollar industries, Mike Oldfield was making meticulously composed atmospheric pieces that challenged stylistic categories and listener expectations. Dense, layered, and symphonic in conception, Oldfield's compositions drew on world music, classical, rock, and pop, and usually featured his own talents as a multi-instrumentalist.
ELEMENTS is a 16-track best-of collection that culls from as many albums. Kicking off with "Tubular Bells," the song made famous by its use in THE EXORCIST, the set then provides an overview of Oldfield's eclectic musical offerings (which often featured guest vocalists). The wistful pop of "Moonlight Shadow," and the hypnotic, pulsing groove of "Foreign Affair" are only two highlights among many. ELEMENTS proves an excellent sampler of the many facets of Oldfield's musical universe.
