Album Notes Though unfairly tagged as one-hit wonders thanks to the unexpected success of the 1997 single "Lovefool" (after it appeared in Baz Luhrmann's ROMEO AND JULIET), the Cardigans were in truth one of the most inventive and clever pure pop bands of the 1990s.The expansive THE BEST OF THE CARDIGANS is a comprehensive overview of their still thriving career, beginning with the sparkly indie pop of their 1994 debut, EMMERDALE, continuing through the ironic lounge overtones of career high point LIFE (featuring the near-perfect singles "Carnival" and "Daddy's Car," arguably their two best songs) to the tougher Garbage-like gloss of its follow-up FIRST BAND ON THE MOON, and finally on to the darker and more introspective material from later albums like GRAN TURISMO and SUPER EXTRA GRAVITY. This well-chosen compilation invites a long-deserved reappraisal of an unjustly overlooked band.
