Synopsis
Alice Munro's short-story cycle tells the story of Rose, a young woman growing up in rural Canada with her stepmother, Flo. Following the two over the course of several decades, THE BEGGAR MAID (titled WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? in Canada) presents Rose as a bright, observant, and engaging young woman who is desperate to make something of her life--and Flo as an eccentric, stubborn counterforce whose ignorance leads her to try to trip Rose up at every turn. As Rose grows up and enters the world outside Flo's stagnant little town, Munro probes her psyche to uncover some fascinating contradictions and many important truths. The 10 stories include "Royal Beatings," "Half a Grapefruit," "Spelling," "White Swan," and "Mischief," as well as the much-anthologized title story.
