Industry Reviews PreS-Gr 1 Newly illustrated by Samuels, this story first appeared in 1955 (Lippincott; o.p.). Three mothers a cat, a dog, and the child narrator's mother each give birth: the cat to a litter of four, the dog to a litter of seven, and the girl's mother to a baby boy. While only the females feed the babies, the fathers, both animal and human, are always on the scene and enjoy the newborns. The recurrent story pattern; simple, repetitive text in large print; and ample white space make this a good choice for very young readers and a fine read aloud. The lively cartoon watercolor illustrations, rendered in a bright palette and simple lines, aptly convey the chaos of a house full of babies. Use this with Tom Birdseye's Waiting for Baby (Holiday, 1991) for a celebration of eagerly awaited infants. Marianne Saccardi, Norwalk Community-Technical College, CT Lopate
