Industry Reviews
Dr. Nasser D. Khalili began to form his collection of Islamic art 20 years ago. His first priority was to establish as wide a range of fine objects as possible in order to encompass and illustrate the material culture of the Islamic world. His long term aim is to stimulate a wider understanding of Islamic art, and to this end he has undertaken the publication of the Collection in a series of well-researched and beautifully illustrated catalogues, of which this is the 21st of 26 volumes. Among the arms and armour in the Khalili Collection there are examples of the weapons with which Muslims fought for religious and secular causes; the chain mail, plate armour, and shields with which they defended themselves and their mounts; the drums, banners, and standards which they took with them on campaign; other items closely connected with warfare, such as talismanic shirts; and items reflecting the status of the military elite, such as various pieces of horse equipment. The 144 items catalogued are reproduced in state-of- the-art color photographs. Published by the Nour Foundation (UK) in association with Azimuth Editions and Oxford U. Press. 10.5x14.5 " .
