Movie Description
An author of travel tip books, who dislikes traveling, is both confused and depressed when his son is killed and his wife leaves him. Synopsis
While attending summer camp, the 12-year-old son of long-married Macon and Sarah is brutally murdered at a fast-food restaurant. A year after the crime, still finding it difficult to cope with their loss, the couple separate. Macon, who writes travel books for businessmen, continues to isolate himself from the world until a free-spirited dog trainer challenges him to start a new life.

Film Notes
Director Lawrence Kasdan and stars William Hurt and Kathleen Turner previously collaborated on 1981's "Body Heat," which represented a career breakthrough for all three. Hurt and Kasdan also worked together on "The Big Chill" (1983).

Ann Tyler's source novel won the National Book Critics Circle Award.

Named Best Picture of 1988 by the New York Film Critics Circle.

Filmed in Panavision; color by Technicolor. Sound by Dolby.
