Movie Description An author of travel tip books, who dislikes traveling, is both confused and depressed when his son is killed and his wife leaves him. When he meets a lovely, offbeat dog trainer, his outlook on life is unexpectedly brightened. Geena Davis shines.
Synopsis While attending summer camp, the 12-year-old son of long-married Macon and Sarah is brutally murdered at a fast-food restaurant. A year after the crime, still finding it difficult to cope with their loss, the couple separate. Macon, who writes travel books for businessmen, continues to isolate himself from the world until a free-spirited dog trainer challenges him to start a new life.
Film Notes Director Lawrence Kasdan and stars William Hurt and Kathleen Turner previously collaborated on 1981's "Body Heat," which represented a career breakthrough for all three. Hurt and Kasdan also worked together on "The Big Chill" (1983).
Ann Tyler's source novel won the National Book Critics Circle Award.
Named Best Picture of 1988 by the New York Film Critics Circle.
Filmed in Panavision; color by Technicolor. Sound by Dolby.
Industry Reviews "...It contains a performance by William Hurt so finely observed and so tenderly acted that it borders on the preternatural....THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST is irresistibly funny..." Los Angeles Times - Sheila Benton (12/23/1988)
"...Geena Davis took a supporting Oscar as the flaky-drab dog trainer who de-funks Hurt; the filmmaker whose confidence she rewarded is producer/director/adapter Lawrence Kasdan, delivering his best effort since BODY HEAT..." USA Today - Mike Clark (06/30/1989)
"TOURIST holds up remarkably well....A marvelous story, directed well and infused with warmth and intelligence..." Premiere - Premiere Staff (03/01/2004)
