Movie Description
These classic Alfred Hitchcock thrillers portray characters that are wrongly accused of murder. A classic British spy mystery, and widely regarded as one of Hitchcock's best, THE 39 STEPS is the story of a man who struggles to prove his innocence. Richard Hannay (Robert Donat) gets more than he bargained for when he brings home a mysterious woman (played by Lucie Mannheim) who says she is a British agent on the trail of a dangerous spy ring. When the woman is killed in Hannay's apartment, he immediately finds himself on the run, burdened with both her murder and the knowledge of her deadly mission. THE 39 STEPS is distinguished by its pioneering use of contrapuntal sound effects, as well as the dynamism between Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll. A film far ahead of its time, BLACKMAIL was the first sound picture directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It centers on a girl who is forced to kill a man and becomes investigated as a suspect by her detective boyfriend. Hitchcock's bold sound experimentation, use of visual and aural repetition, and visual effects with mirrors make this a seminal British film, based on the play by Charles Bennett.
