Details

Movie Description It wasn't until the bop explosion, fueled, ironically, by Bird's alto playing, that the tenor sax became THE jazz instrument. However, the groundwork for the tenor's takeover had been laid years before by the incredible playing of Coleman Hawkins, the man who made a place for the tenor as a solo instrument. This video compilation contains some astounding, important, and rare footage of some jazz legends showing what they contributed to their instrument and why they were among the greatest players of their day. Branford Marsalis hosts.
Synopsis Guided by Branford Marsalis' compelling commentary and aided by fabulous film clips, the program continues with clips by Coleman Hawkins and his followers including Bud Freeman, Georgie Auld, Don Byas and Ben Webster.
