After their father's suicide, Nellie and Jackson Courtright make their way to the desolate town of Rita Blanca in the future Okalahoma panhandle. Jackson becomes sheriff and Nellie takes a position as town telegrapher. After Jackson guns down some bandits, the ever-resourceful Nellie prints up a best-selling pamphlet about the events.
