Album Notes Just as the rising sun tracks a course around the world each morning, Tan Dun's '2000 Today: A World Symphony for the Millenium' describes an arc which cuts across time zones, continents, races and cultures. Written as a soundtrack for the PBS Y2K broadcast, the symphony is comprised of eleven movements, each an energetic mix of world musical styles. After the opening prelude of Bob Marley's "One Love" featuring the Boys Choir of Harlem and the Gypsy Kings, the journey begins in "Beyond Light" with a chorus singing an ascending raga-like scale underscored by the deep intonation of Tibetan monks and booming ohdaiku drums, soon to be joined by the strings and brass of the BBC Concert Orchestra in enthusiastic celebration. Throughout the orbit of the piece this elevating scale will be heard, as inflected by gagaku orchestras or Jewish klezmerim in concert with a whirling array of instruments, many of which you might not know by name, such as the chinese fiddle called the erhu, the mandolin-like pipa and the double reed sona, along with the more familiar penny whistle and didgeridoo. In 'A World Symphony' all are lifted in joy and in one song, to mark the passing of one very special day.
