Movie Description Ten screenwriters collaborated on this series of tales concerning the effect a tailcoat cursed by its tailor has on those who wear it. The video release features a W.C. Fields segment not included in the original theatrical release.
Synopsis A dress tailcoat alters the lives of a variety of New Yorkers -- some for the better, some for the worse -- in this entertaining, episodic drama.
The jacket first falls into the possession of Orman, a matinee idol desperately in love with a married woman. When this ill-fated love triangle results in the star being shot, the garment changes hands numerous times.
Among those who temporarily possess it are Charles Smith, a down-on-his-luck pianist, and Browne, a failed lawyer who has become a bum. The coat comes in extremely handy for both men -- for Charles when he gets a golden opportunity to conduct an orchestra at Carnegie Hall, and for Browne when he receives an invitation to his college's 25th reunion.
Eventually, the jacket ends up with a thief who tries to escape with it aboard an airplane.
Film Notes Contains fully restored W.C. Fields footage not included in the original theatrical release.
Released theatrically in New York City September 24, 1942.
Additional cast: The Hall Johnson Choir (Themselves); James Rennie (Hank Bronson); Cordell Hickman (Nicodemus); Paul Renay ("Spud" Johnson); Barbara Lynn (Mary); and Helene Reynolds (Actress).
The film's budget was a bit more than $1 million -- not that much in light of all the star names attached to the project. The actors and writers worked for less than their usual wages because of the episodic nature of the movie.
