John Anderson is sometimes called a new traditionalist because of his ability to combine country roots with modern trends, a talent he expands on with 1997's TAKIN' THE COUNTRY BACK. Songs such as "Sara" and "I Used to Love Her" are sorrowful ballads that underscore the pangs of both love and loss. Singing with a George Jones-type melancholy, Anderson's got a keen ear for melody and phrasing, and a passionate delivery.
Other songs on TAKIN' THE COUNTRY BACK show life's lighter side. Anderson's cover of Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" is upbeat and inspired, as is the opening cut, "Somebody Slap Me," a song about falling in love that manages to avoid the cliches of the genre. A varied album, TAKIN' THE COUNTRY BACK delves into the stock C&W topics of joy and heartache and comes up with fresh insights at every turn.
