Synopsis Originally entitled, IF THIS IS A MAN, Levi's narrative of his experiences at Auschwitz is unique among Holocaust memoirs for its simplicity, its lack of self-pity, and its objectivity; he often emphasizes not his own sufferings but the many instances of goodness he found among his fellow prisoners. In an appendix, Levi stated: "[I]n writing this book, I deliberately took on the calm and sober language of a witness, not the plaintive tone of a victim or the outrage of an avenger."

Industry Reviews "To me, the greatest nonfiction sentence of the century--if such a silly thing can be said to exist--is from 'Survival in Auschwitz', when Levi describes the washroom in the camp: 'The washroom was far from attractive.'" Frazier
"[An] imperishable masterpiece." (04/08/2007)
