The latest vocal talent to emerge from the Motor City is Thornetta Davis, a blues-based singer whose musical gifts transcend simple classification. Already a hometown favorite, Davis first drew national attention as a back-up singer for alterna funk-rockers Big Chief, who return the favor and back her on SUNDAY MORNING MUSIC. This album avoids the slick overproduction of most contemporary R&B, instead veering towards a more organic sound that ranges from the acid-rock workout "The Deal" to the gospel-flavored "Only One." Black Crowes fans will immediately take to the blues-rock "Try To Remember" as well as the opening cut "Cry," where Davis gets to show off her richly textured voice. A funky reading of Stevie Wonder's "You Haven't Done Nothin'" allows her to cut loose, while she sets a darker mood on "And I Spin," an ode to broken romance. SUNDAY MORNING MUSIC is an excellent collection that ably displays Thornetta Davis' broad vocal range and undeniable talents.
Industry Reviews ...Backed by thrashy funk-hoppers Big Chief and propelled by her powerful, sinewy vocals, Davis takes on gospel, soul, R&B, and, of course, Motown...making them all her own. Entertainment Weekly (11/26/1996)
