Synopsis
In alternating chapters, this novel by Sigmund Freud's great-granddaughter (and the daughter of the painter Lucian Freud) describes events in early 20th-century Germany and in London in the 1990s, and contrasts a wealthy Jewish family's estate (Gaglow) with its later decline after World War II. Much of the novel is narrated by Sarah Linder, a London actress who, discovering that the estate has been put up for sale, urges her father to share his memories of the place.
