Synopsis This study of the financial plight of the current generation of post-college youth paints a dark picture, and one with no light at the end of the tunnel. The current generation, says Tamara Draut, cannot expect to have the same things that their parents had, especially a home and a middle-class lifestyle. High college tuitions have left graduates with huge debt; housing and living costs are high; wages are low. The prospect of starting a family is daunting, and many are already in a debt habit that is spiraling beyond control. Draut uses both a wealth of data along with case studies and personal anecdotes to underscore the seriousness of this national problem as she places the blame for it on the older generation and the politicians. Their greed, she says, fed the wealthy at the expense of the middle class, leaving the next generation--as she says--strapped.

Industry Reviews "Draut...offers diverse, thoroughly contextualized case studies with supporting statistical data, as well as the occasional outburst of advocacy. The thirty-something author knows whereof she writes, and occasionally references her own experience." (03/19/2006)
