Album Notes This release includes a bonus CD featuring rare tracks. Grant Lee Buffalo: Grant Lee Phillips (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, banjo, dobro, mandolin, harmonica, celeste, electric organ, pump organ, Mellotron); Paul Kimble (piano, electric organ, pump organ, Mellotron, vibraphone, bass, background vocals); Joey Peters (drums, percussion, bells). Additional personnel: Greg Leisz (pedal steel guitar); Bob Fergo (violin); Greg Adamson (cello); Robyn Hitchcock (harmonica, background vocals); Rami Jaffee (Hammond B-3 organ); Dan Rothchild, Andrew Williams (background vocals). Includes liner notes by Grant-Lee Phillips. 30 tracks. A band that seemed to spend most of its existence on the verge of a major breakthrough that never happened, Grant Lee Buffalo had it all--high-profile supporters (R.E.M., Bob Mould), critical acclaim, a devoted fanbase, and a compelling frontman in singer/songwriter Grant Lee Phillips. However, none of these factors kept the inventive California-based group--which managed to combine a vintage, rustic sound with a modern-rock sensibility--from folding in the late '90s after four lauded albums. This two-disc set cherry-picks from each of those records, presenting wonderful tracks such as "The Shining Hour," a vibrant acoustic-pop tune; the rootsy guitar-anthem "Lone Star Song"; and the gorgeous, melancholy "Mockingbirds," which is as close as Grant Lee Buffalo came to a hit. STORM HYMNAL also includes a 14-track disc of top-notch B-sides and rarities, making it equally enjoyable as an introduction for newcomers and as a well-selected overview for the faithful.
