Album Notes Personnel includes: John McGeoch (guitar). Recorded at Bearsville Studios, Bearsville, New York. The third, and last, Sugarcubes album, barring a brace of posthumous releases, STICK AROUND FOR JOY was released at the height of the first wave of "alternative rock," and is something of a departure for the band. The album offers more muscular, straight-ahead rock than the Sugarcubes' previous releases, leaving most of their previous eccentricity to be delivered by Bjork's astonishing vocal range and the occasional spoken word intonations of Einer Orn (which, though still present, are less intrusive on this record than earlier ones). Though more rock isn't a bad thing, it does slightly dampen the band's originality. That notwithstanding, this set still has a number of highlights. The gently rocking beat of "Hit" is cleverly augmented by DJ scratches and James Bond theme-type accents, while "I'm Happy" features an alternately ringing and crunchy guitar line and a whole clatter of cymbals, all capped by Bjork's soaring voice. The kinetic "Hetero Scum" also highlights some wickedly frenzied drumming. Also of note is the strange "Chihuahua," which introduces dub style to the band, a notion that Bjork would adapt as she moved on to spectacular success as a solo performer.
Industry Reviews 3 Stars - Good - ...The Sugarcubes have never sounded more accomplished or less self-conscious... Q (03/01/1992)
...a return to the band's strange mixture of rock and club music, with [singer] Bjork's voice vaulting through grinding guitars and funk rhythms... New York Times (02/19/1992)
