Movie Description
Liza Minnelli stars in this enlightening song and dance gala about growing old but staying young inside. Mavis (Minnelli) signs up to teach tap dancing at a church, but when she's bombarded with a clumsy group of problem-ridden enrollees, she realizes she's in for more than she bargained for. As Mavis and her students rehearse for the big year-end recital, they confess to their frustrations of womanhood, bond together and are transformed into a formidable dance troupe.
Director Lewis Gilbert brilliantly brings Richard Harris's musical STEPPING OUT from the stage to the big screen. Gilbert, who formerly directed British classics such as ALFIE, YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, and FRIENDS, makes a successful leap into the musical genre. His knowledge of cinematography and storytelling make STEPPING OUT an unforgettable film which will hypnotize viewers and leave their feet tapping.
Synopsis
When an ex-Broadway dancer begins teaching tap to a group of clay-footed adults, she has no idea they would be commissioned to perform at a local charity event.

Filmed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and Buffalo, New York.
STEPPING OUT was filmed in sequence. It began shooting August 27, 1990 and completed shooting November 16, 1990. Locations in Toronto's old town of York included the Godderham Warts flatiron building and Toronto's oldest church, the St. James Anglican Cathedral.
STEPPING OUT was director Lewis Gilbert's 35th film. Gilbert is a recipient of BAFTA's Michael Balcon Award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema. He began working with producer John Dark in the late 1950s.
Richard Harris's play STEPPING OUT premiered in London at the Duke of York's Theatre on September 25, 1984, and ran there for more than 1,000 performances, winning the Evening Standard Comedy of the Year Award. The original stage version starred Ann Gabrielle and Sue Scott-Davison. The play was also produced in the Asia, Australia, South Africa, continental Europe and the United States. Tommy Tune directed the New York production, where Richard Harris made his Broadway debut. In the film version of the play, the setting was changed from a London church hall to a community center in Buffalo, New York.
The charity show routine in the film was performed live in front of a 1500-seat capacity crowd on October 12, 1990. All proceeds from the event went to the Starlight Foundation, an international charity organization benefiting children.
