Synopsis In 1855 two thirteen-year-old girls, one white and one black, run away from a southern farm and make the difficult journey north to freedom, living to recount their story forty-one years later to two similar young girls., Susannah McKnight, a privileged white girl, is forced to leave her beloved Vermont home and move to her uncle's Virginia plantation in this story set in 1855. When she reaches Virginia, Susannah, who is against slavery, is given a slave girl named Bethlehem. Susannah soon persuades Bethlehem to join her in a daring escape--one that will take Susannah back to Vermont and Bethlehem to Canada. This story is told, in alternating chapters, by Susannah and Bethlehem .
