Movie Description
Britain's Henderson Dores, an 18th century art expert and recent New York City transplant has one burning desire - to be "Americanized." his quest is complicated with comic mishaps when he is sent to Georgia to acquire a Renoir.

Synopsis
British art buyer Henderson Dores attempts to purchase a $10 million Renoir from eccentric Southern patriarch Loomis Gage in this madcap comedy set deep in the heart of Georgia. A fish-out-of-water if their ever was one, Dores experiences a severe case of culture shock trying to track down the elusive canvas -- a condition compounded by his run-ins with Gage's crazy offspring, one of whom has sold the painting to villainous New York art dealers.

"Stars and Bars" was originally developed by David Puttnam. When Puttnam was promoted to head of Columbia, his former partner, producer Sandy Lieberson, inherited the project.
