Album Notes Personnel: Wynton Marsalis (vocals, trumpet); Ellis Marsalis (piano); Reginald Veal (bass); Herlin Riley (drums). Includes liner notes by Stanley Crouch. Something a bit different for Marsalis brother Wynton: an all-standards and ballads album. This record is a tribute of sorts to the songs that jazzmen throughout history have interpreted with reverence and the twist of personal expression. The program consists of many classic Broadway and Tin Pan Alley tunes--many of which were part of the "songbooks" of Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday. The way Marsalis caresses the melody of "Where or When" (also covered by rockers Dave Edmunds and Dion and the Belmonts) would meet with Sinatra's approval and make Clark Terry or Miles Davis envious. Marsalis also contributes originals, written in the "standard" style. "The Seductress," for example, could be an obscure, beautiful Duke Ellington ballad from the 1930s. This is a near-perfect jazz album, in which Marsalis tips his hat to the giants that have come before--both classic ballad players (Terry, Clifford Brown) and songwriters (Rodgers and Hart, Hoagy Carmichael). And it's a wonderful album to relax with, at that.
Industry Reviews 5 Stars - Excellent - ...Marsalis bestows all the wisdom at his command...his soft and elegant speech tones, so musically right, accompany his emotional immersion... Down Beat (08/01/1990)
...Wynton cherishes the elegance of melody and the nuance of phrasing, and THE RESOLUTION OF ROMANCE plays like a definitive statement of his musical principles...this is the trumpeter's finest hour... Musician (01/01/1991)
