Movie Description When a poor woman in 1940s colonial India rejects the sexual demands of a tax collector, the political significance of her act of resistance resonates throughout her village, but she stands alone in her fight against imperialism.
Synopsis "Spices" is set in the 1940s, when India was still a British colony and tax collectors called sudebars, along with their soldiers, terrorized villagers by demanding more than just taxes.
The film examines the plight of an impoverished young woman named Sonbai who spurns the sudebar's advances and must take refuge in a pepper factory. Meanwhile, most of her fellow villagers look the other way -- particularly the men, who steadfastly ignore injustices against women.
Film Notes This was Smita Patil's final film role.

Industry Reviews "...Socially alert....[Patil] gives a credible performance..." Canby
"...A simple, strong social melodrama that rivets your attention and burns your eyes....SPICES is something of a feminist HIGH NOON..." Los Angeles Times - Michael Wilmington (11/03/1989)
