Movie Description Speechwriters for opposing political candidates fall in love with each other on the campaign trail in this formulaic romantic comedy.
Synopsis Combating a bout of insomnia, two speech writers meet in front of a bottle of Nytol. Before long, Kevin and Julia find out that they work for competing political campaigns. But it's too late -- they are in love, and at a public appearance the two criticize each other so much that it becomes obvious even to them. The story unfolds, poking fun of politics and politicians, as the couple tries to carry on a clandestine love affair behind the backs of their co-workers and media.
Film Notes Color by DeLuxe.
Produced by Reny Harlin's and Geena Davis' production company Forge.
Originally released on video May 16, 1995.
The plot of "Speechless" vaguely parallels the highly publicized relationship between political gurus James Carville (Bill Clinton's campaign manager) and Mary Matalain (of the George Bush camp). The producers, Geena Davis and husband Renny Harlin, say that the script was written by Robert King in 1989, three years before the 1992 presidential campaign. It was handed to Harlin and Davis by MGM when the original production, due to star Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, folded.
Industry Reviews "...Delicious screwball comedy....Agile pace, good insults..." -- Rating: B+ Entertainment Weekly - pp.68-70 - Melissa Pierson
