Movie Description Whiskey-voiced Park Overall stars in this twangy empowerment tale full of backwater stereotypes and Las Vegas promos. She plays a trailer-park wife who discovers her neanderthal trucker husband cheatin' on her. The heroine takes for Vegas to hook up with some callow young LA guys who mockingly flirted with her on the road. Meanwhile the husband gets the news that she's won a fortune in a mail-in jackpot. He heads to the gambling mecca to forcibly `reconcile' so he can get his hands on the money. Then there's an ill-matched subtheme in which several characters
either discover that their friends are gay or come of the closet themselves. Huh?! But dig that great alt-indie soundtrack, set off by an imitation Portishead number. For another drawly desert comedy-drama of feminism and money, check out CADILLAC RANCH.
Synopsis Melba May (Overall), an accomplished dreamer, feels like the queen of her trailer park. However, her humble kitsch-filled kingdom crumbles when she catches her husband and best friend sullying the royal boudoir together. Now the small desert trailer park she calls home feels stifling, oppressive and ugly. When a telephone psychic reveals that she will soon meet three kings, she decks herself out in a glitter-covered dress and her mother's best faux-crystal earrings and heads out for a date with destiny at the local watering hole. Miraculously, her three kings appear in the form of a triad of cute boys (Prinze Jr., Kennedy, Petrarca) making a brief pit stop on their way to Las Vegas. Convinced that the young men are heaven-sent, Melba joins them on a liberating road trip to Las Vegas, in search of glamour, adventure and fortune.
Industry Reviews "...A lively little movie with lots of heart and humor....SPARKLER lives up to its name..." Los Angeles Times - Kevin Thomas (04/02/1999)
