Synopsis
Conceptual artist, musician, and writer Paul D. Miller (aka DJ Spooky that Subliminal Kid) edits together a mix of writings directly or obliquely focused on the subjects of sampling and the remix. Authors, composers, and scholars all contribute: Steve Reich leads things off with a personal account of his relationship with technology; Chuck D submits three poetic pieces; there is an article on South African musical resistance and one on Islam and hip-hop; Pierre Boulez and Moby get interviewed; and Jonathan Lethem writes about literary appropriation and plagiarism. The CD that accompanies the book is a 45-track mix sampling everything from Gertrude Stein, Marcel Duchamp, and Antonin Artaud to Sonic Youth, Sun Ra, Erik Satie, and a scratch battle between DJ Spooky and Rob Swift.
