Album Notes A fine sampler of early Marley material, this disc finds Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, Lee Perry (who manned the production boards on many of these sessions), and Marley himself doing what they do best. The Wailers' recordings from the late '60s and early '70s are a musical grab-bag of '50s doo-wop, mid-'60s black American R&B, and the burbling rhythms of ska and other indigenous island musics. Here, superb songs and innovative hybrids abound--from the gentle sway of "African Herbman" (a rewrite of a Richie Havens song) to the Coasters-like ensemble pop of "Stand Alone." In the gospel-blues of "This Train" and the electric jive-pulse of "It's All Right," one can hear just how the Wailers imbue their knowledge of and enthusiasm for the history of rock & roll with percussive, Caribbean-flavored grooves. It doesn't hurt that Marley, even at this early stage, is a phenomenal songwriter, already wedding hooky melodies and complex, danceable beats in "Caution" and "My Cup." The reproduction quality of this disc may not be pristine, but SOUL REBEL is such an outstanding collection of songs that only a strict audiophile could quibble.
