Synopsis Terrence Cheng takes as the hero of his novel the young nameless man who, in an unforgettable news photograph, stood his ground against the army tanks in Tiananmen Square in the summer of 1989. Constructing a life for the man he calls Ziao-Di, Cheng sends him to Cornell as an exchange student, puts him through a troubled romance, and sends him jobless through the streets of Beijing, where he becomes increasingly politicized.
