Originally released as the two-volume ON THE BOARDWALK: THE VENICE BEACH TAPES, this set documents an important part of Ted Hawkins' musical career. Hawkins was a regular player on the Venice Beach boardwalk. His outdoor performances were more than just work or a source of income; they played an important role in shaping Hawkins as an artist. Through such public playing, Hawkins developed a following among people who weren't necessarily familiar with his two critically lauded albums.
VENICE BEACH, recorded in Nashville in 1985, successfully captures the energy and repertoire of Hawkins' solo street performances. The set differs most significantly from his other studio albums is that it consists of covers, with Hawkins' own "Ladder Of Success" being the only exception. This is a stunning glimpse into Hawkins' musical precedents and into his keen ability to choose material that connects quickly with an audience

...To classify Ted Hawkins as a masterful folk singer may be misleading, but ultimately that's as close as we're likely to come to labeling his talent. Better yet, just call his slim but superb recorded legacy (and this collection) wonderfully unique.
