Synopsis Hank and Leland Stamper are half-brothers in a family of loggers. When the loggers' union goes on strike, the Stampers refuse to go with them. In addition to their conflict with the community, Hank and Leland are in conflict with each other: Hank is head of the family business; Leland is an Ivy League graduate. Hank has had an affair with Leland's mother; Leland seduces Hank's wife in revenge. These complexities are illustrated using multiple points of view, film techniques, and other narrative innovations.
Industry Reviews "[Bruce] Barcott had studied 300 works of Northwest literature for inclusion in his 1994 anthology, NORTHWEST PASSAGES, and had come away as a fan of Kesey's second novel, its soaring ambition, its remarkable scope. Barcott said, 'SOMETIMES A GREAT NOTION has Shakespearean themes played out against a raw, burly Oregon backdrop. Still the heavyweight champion of Northwest novels. Huge, bold, sprawling, brilliant. Unrivaled, unchallenged, unsurpassed.'" (11/16/2001)
