While the trombone was ever-present during the Swing and bebop eras, there weren't that many players on the avant-garde scene. One of the earliest and best modernist trombonists was and remains Grachan Moncur III. SOME OTHER STUFF, originally issued in 1964, is one of Moncur's few discs as a leader. He assembled a tremendous band for this session: three-fifths of the classic Miles Davis 1960s quintet (Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, and Wayne Shorter) and bass ace Cecil McBee. STUFF is hardly a free-for-all, though--Moncur's originals feature knotty melodies, fiercely focused ensemble playing, and off-kilter yet potent swing.
Industry Reviews ...SOME OTHER STUFF...has more than its share of exploratory moments, and even 31 years later the music still sounds advanced... Jazziz (10/01/1995)
