Master P and his No Limit soldiers raised Southern gangsta rap from a localized phenomenon to an entertainment empire. It was only a matter of time before other crews emerged from P's hometown of New Orleans to add a little competition to the game. Enter Cash Money Records and its roster of talented artists, including the Hot Boys and Lil' Wayne. SOLJA RAGS, a solo LP from Juvenile of the Hot Boys, is a powerful example of the Southern-fried sounds being cooked up in one of the nation's most poverty-stricken cities.
SOLJA RAGS is marked by tightly mapped-out arrangements of the bouncy rhythms and wailing synths synonymous with the Southern sound. Juvenille and his cronies approach the mic with confidence and bring listeners into the heart of their own dementia and gangsta war tales. Tracks like "I Did That," featuring Big Moe & BG, is a classic posse cut with seamless mic passing over a tight track.
