Album Notes Chuck Prophet first garnered attention as the guitarist for 1980s roots-rockers Green On Red, but since then he's maintained a consistent solo career, taking that rootsy template to places his former band never imagined. His 10th solo album, SOAP AND WATER, mixes gritty blues, country, and soul influences with a personalized, idiosyncratic songwriting approach and quirky production touches. His rich, atmospheric guitar work and matter-of-fact, guy-next-door vocal delivery are consistent throughout, but there's plenty of stylistic variation from cut to cut, ensuring that ear fatigue neither sets in nor takes hold. GREEN ON RED fans won't be put off by Prophet's diversity, but it may tweak their ears in pleasantly unexpected ways.
Industry Reviews 4 stars out of 5 -- The range of styles is impressive, from the pale hip hop of 'Something's Stupid' to the title track's murky Southern funk...
4 stars out of 5 -- The rockier songs are reminiscent of late-'70s Rolling Stones and new wave-era Tom Petty.
[T]here's still something elegantly and acerbically wasted about Prophet. This collection of roots rock is Stonesy loose... -- Grade: A-
