Synopsis The outlaw lifestyle figured prominently in Leif Enger's acclaimed bestselling debut novel, PEACE LIKE A RIVER. Though set in the 1960s, the book dealt with issues of honor and violence that seemed to come out of the 1860s. In his second novel, Enger moves back to 1915 to follow a notorious outlaw, Glendon Hale, as he travels west from Minnesota to California in an attempt to right the wrongs of his past. His exploits are chronicled by failed novelist Monte Beckett, who becomes Hale's unlikely comrade. Meanwhile, a relentless Pinkerton detective is hot on Hale's trail. Enger's novel has all the rugged thrills of the western, but its attention to character, the sumptuousness of its detail, and its clever investigation of writing itself raises it to the level of literature.
