David Denby, longtime film critic for The New Yorker, has taken it upon himself to compose a manifesto against "snark," which he vaguely defines as quick, critical humor that foregoes effective analysis of the subject. Denby charts the evolution of snark, from ancient Rome to Lewis Carroll to Spy magazine, culminating in entertainment websites such as Gawker and TMZ. He laments the declining intelligence (and importance) of criticism that has accompanied snark's rise in pop culture, and calls for a return to wit and civil discourse as a means for relevant discussion.
