With an impressive mix of thoughtful lyricism, melodic structure, and hard-hitting riffs, aggro-rock trio Smile Empty Soul manages to put Santa Clarita, CA on the map. Frontman Sean Danielsen sings with a kind of world-weariness that falls somewhere between Scott Weiland and the late Layne Staley. This resignation works particularly well when he's railing against organized religion (a disgusted "Every Sunday"), youthful ennui (the hard-hitting "Nowhere Kids"), and family dysfunction (a heart-wrenching "The Other Side"). Danielsen not only has plenty of issues to work out through his music, but also sings with the kind of sincerity that you can't get from an A&R brainstorming meeting. Augmented by a subtle string arrangement, "This Is War" is the album's linchpin, with its strong anti-war message. Created with the perfect mix of anger, sensitivity, and insight, the self-titled debut by Smile Empty Soul sets a new benchmark for the often-limited parameters of aggro-rock.
